Dynamic Earth and The Big Nickel, Sudbury
Dynamic Earth
A Science North attraction
Open during daytime hours seasonally from March to October.
An innovative mining and geology centre that lets you explore the planet beneath your feet and its precious cargo of minerals. Dynamic Earth, home of the Big Nickel, is a “blast” for everyone on the third planet from the sun.

General admission includes:
Underground Tour
Journey seven storeys below Earth’s surface! As you are lowered into the dramatic Inco Chasm. You’ll be amazed by a state-of-the-art multimedia show projected on the rock walls and moving screens. A simulated dynamite blast, and the chance to get up-close to real mining equipment, make this tour a one-of-a-kind experience!
Strange Matter
A special exhibition in the MacLean Engineering Gallery
Discover the secrets of everyday stuff with the new exhibition Strange Matter! From metals and crystals to magnets and glass, this hands-on exhibition will allow you to use science to explore the bizarre world of modern materials. The exhibit captures advanced materials used in high-tech fields such as the space program and cardiac surgery, and reveals them in more common places, like the shoes that you wear, the dishes you eat off of, the CDs you listen to and the bike or skateboard you ride.
Mining Command Centre
Try your hand at the big machines!
Manipulate a remote-controlled rock breaker in Dynamic Earth’s underground mine or try out the new Caterpillar excavator simulator! You can also track the movements of visitors underground using the newly installed HLS (Hard-Line Solutions Inc.) digital communication system.
Atlas Copco Theatre
The 125-seat Altas Copco Theatre features exciting films projected on a 12 m (38 ft.) wide by 7 m (22.5 ft.) high screen with “next generation” high-definition digital images and resolution. In 2010 the high-definition film Ground Rules: Mining Right for a Sustainable Future will be presented in the Atlas Copco Theatre. Shot on location on several continents, the film covers all aspects of the mining process from exploration to reclamation. Run time: 25 minutes.
Ground Rules: Mining Right for a Sustainable Future is a Science North production.
Rocks to Riches
A Science North Production
A multimedia presentation in the Xstrata Nickel Gallery. With one visit you’ll never see your kitchen sink or plumbing pipes the same way! This walk-through theatre features state-of-the-art presentation technology that takes you step-by-step through the processing of nickel and copper, from the “mill” to the “smelter” and then the “refinery”.
Plus
Let the kids play in a three-level miniature mine using tools and equipment that are just their size!
Collect and exchange rocks and minerals in the Rockhound Lab and pan for gold, like a Yukon prospector. Take a seat and experience Nickel City Stories, an engaging object theatre presentation about the discovery of nickel, and Sudbury’s connections with the likes of Thomas Edison and the Apollo Astronauts. Don’t forget to have your picture taken with the famous Big Nickel!
The Big Nickel The Big Nickel monument is Sudbury's famous nine-metre (30 ft.) high tribute to nickel and Sudbury's significance as a world mining centre makes a great photo opportunity at Dynamic Earth.
Halloween Week
Every year, Dynamic Earth transforms itself from a geology and mining attraction to Northern Ontario's Halloween Headquarters! Board the eerie glass-enclosed elevator and descend 7-storeys into the underground to tour the 'Tunnel of Terror' (if you dare!). Visitors should note that the normal Dynamic Earth experience is not available during Halloween Week.
