Mosquitoes

 

On my walk this morning, I was greeted by a bunch of unwelcome critters ... mosquitoes. As wonderful as it is to move into the season of sun and warmth, there is always a price.  People who are allergic to these bites pay a larger price than others. Recent years have also brought the added concern of disease such as the West Nile Virus.

 

It is the female mosquito that you have to worry about because the male mosquito doesn’t bite. When she sticks her “stinger” (proboscis) into your skin she introduces a protein from her saliva that allows her to suck your blood until she is full.  Afterward, some of the protein is left in your skin, which is what causes the reaction.

Roberta Heale has worked in Sudbury for 20 years as an RN, a Nurse Practitioner and, since 2006, a professor in the School of Nursing at Laurentian University.  She is a strong advocate for health of individuals, families and communities.  This work has recently resulted in her involvement as co-founder of the Sudbury District Nurse Practitioner Clinics, the first family practice in Canada that was developed and governed by Nurse Practitioners.  Roberta’s practice is based on the foundation of health promotion and disease prevention and she continues to look for innovative and creative ways to provide information to people to optimize their well being.
